gametogensis, disjunction etc Flashcards
what is gametogenesis
The production of gametes in animals
What is spermatogenesis and what does it produce?
Produces sperm
Cytoplasm is divided evenly making four equal sized sperm cells
what is oogenesis and what does it produce?
produces egg
Cytoplasm does not divide evenly
what happens to cells that don’t receive enough cytoplasm and what are they called?
they die
and are called polar bodies
What are sex chromosomes in male and female?
female xx
male xy
what is nondisjunction?
Homologous chromosomes that failed to separate during meiosis
Results in one cell having an extra chromosome and one cell missing a chromosome
what is trisomy? and example
Where there are 3 chromosomes instead of a homologous pair
example: down syndrome
What is monosomy and give an example?
where there is a single chromosome in place of a homologous pair
Example Turner syndrome
what is a karyotype?
A picture of all chromosomes arranged by size number and shape
How many pairs of autosomes and pairs of sex chromosomes do humans have?
22 pairs of autosomes
One pair of sex chromosomes
