Steps in Systematic Search Flashcards
Steps of Systematic Search
- Describe research question
- Identify concepts in research question
- Write concepts into circles
- Identify synonyms for concepts
- Combine search concepts
Systematic Search vs Systematic Analysis
Systematic Search:
- Search method
Systematic Review:
- Experimental research method to review publication
Truncation
Adding a * to the end of a word
- Covers all possible root words
Using AND/OR
AND will decrease the amount of results, more specific
- Use with difference concepts/sets
OR will increase the amount of results, less specific
- Use with Synonyms
Subject Headings
Similar to hashtags, represents what the research paper is about
- Add a / to the end
Explode
Will take the given tag and explode everything beneath it to include them
- Add exp in front of the keyword
Keywords
Search papers with the given word
- Going right = more narrow
- Going left = More broad
Scope
GIves the scope note, gives meaning behind the tag
- Provides more context for more ambiguous keywords
What to do if search results are high
Limit Search by:
- Year of Publication
- Animal Type
- Study Type
mp
Many places, add to the end as: .mp
- General Keyword Search, will look for keyword in the heading, abstract, etc. Just wherever the machine can search
Pubmed
PubMed brings in too much information
- Uses its own algorithm to bring in more keywords it thinks is relevant
- Truncation will turn off MESH mapping and prevent any irrelevant keywords
- Not good to use truncation as it will not map terms to subject headings
MESH Map
Group of terms that are associated with an overall topic
PubMed vs Medline
Just use Medline
- Its faster
- Brings in less info so less overwhelming
