Stem & Specialized Cells & Hierarchy of Organisms Flashcards
Learning Target #4
What’s a stem cell?
Unspecialized cells that divide quickly and do not have a particular function
What is an organ?
Two or more types of tissues that work together to perform a complex life function.
What is tissue?
a collection of similar cells that perform a particular, but limited, function.
What is an organism?
two or more organ systems which function together for life
What is an organ system?
groups of organs working together to perform a vital life function
Describe the hierarchy of an organism from the small to largest unit?
Cell –> Tissue –> Organ –> Organ system –> Oraganism
What are the 2 types of stem cells?
- Embryonic Stem Cells
2. Tissue Stem Cells
What is an embryonic stem cell?
stem cells can differentiate into any kind of cell, but only in body during first few days of life (conception).
What is a tissue stem cell?
stem cells that exist within bone marrow & umbilical cord and are only able to differentiate into limited certain types of blood cells.
What is the process called when the stem cells develop into specialized cells?
Cellular Differentiation
What is a specialized cell?
- A cell that has a particular structure and performs a specific function
- Each type has unique shape, size and features allowing it to do its job accurately
