Circulatory System Flashcards
Learning Target #5C
What is the structure and function of veins?
Thin walled muscular tubes that carry blood back to the heart. Have one way valves to prevent blood backflow
What is the structure and function of arteries?
Thick walled muscular tubes that carry blood away from the heart. Walls are thick to withstand pressure of blood from heart.
What is the structure and function of capillaries?
Tiny tubes that cover all cells of body. Walls of tube are only one cell thick wide to enable quick diffusion of O2/nutrient & CO2/waste.
What is the connective tissue circulating through the body “connecting” all parts. What are the four main components that make up this tissue?
Blood. Four components are: 1. Plasma 2. Red Blood Cells 3. White blood cells 4. Platelets
What are blood Vessels? What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
A network of tubes that carry blood
Three types of blood vessels are; capillaries, arteries and veins.
What do White blood cells do?
fights infection by recognizing and destroying bacteria and viruses.
What do red blood cells do?
contains protein hemoglobin which attracts O2/CO2 molecules. RBC transports O2 to cells and CO2 away from cells
What do platelet cells do?
Help clot blood
What is plasma?
Liquid which carries hormones, wastes and other blood components (RBC, WBC, platelets)
What are the nerve cells called that send electrical signal to contract heart?
pacemaker cells
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four
What is the purpose of the heart?
Pumps blood around body
Arteries branch smaller and smaller until they become…
Capillaries
What blood vessel returns blood to the heart?
Veins
Capillaries branch together to form…
veins
