Stem Decays Flashcards
Most often found on dead trees but can also attack the heartwood of living trees by gaining entry through wounds, insect holes and dwarf mistletoe infections
Hits mature species of almost all conifers in Kootenays
Red/brown band on fruiting body (conk)
Red Belt Conk
Fomitopsis pinicola
Often gains entry through roots and butts of trees, using fire scars, armillaria lesions and other wounds as an entry point
Dark brown conks that have a funnel-like appearance when found on the ground next to the tree (most common) and a shelf-like appearance when growing on the tree
Most common on Fd, Hw and Py but can be found on other conifers
Looks like cow/dog shit
Schweinitzii Root/Butt Rot
Phaeolus schweinitzii
“Badass” - Saprophyte (feeds on living tissue)
Does not require a wound for entry
Often enters healthy trees through branch stubs but mechanical damage also provides entry point
Infections occur in living brances after 35-45 years but normally don’t become established in trunk for another 100
Conks have a distinct toothed lower surface
Distinctive toothed lower surface, interior is brick red
Most common on Hw and true firs in the interior
Fd, Cw and Se are also susceptible
