Stem Cells Flashcards
What type of cell are stem cells
Undifferentiated cells
What do embryonic stem cells have the potential to?
Turn into any type of cell
Where are stem cells found?
In early human embryos or in bone marrow in adults
What is the difference between adults stem cells and embryonic stem cells?
Adult cells can only turn into blood cells. Embryonic turn into any type of cell
What do medicine use adult stem cells for?
To cure disease, replace faulty blood cells
What do medicine use embryonic stem cells for?
Replace faulty cells, insulin producing cells or nerve cells
What is therapeutic cloning?
An embryo that is made of the same genetic information as the patient so the stem cells produced contain the same genes and won’t be rejected if used to replace faulty cells
What are the risk of using stem cells in medicine?
Stem cells grown in a lab may become contaminated with a virus that could be passed on making the patient sick
Why are people against stem cells?
experiments shouldn’t be done on potential human lifes.
Where are stem cells found in plants?
Meristems
What can stem cells do throughout the plants entire life?
differentiate into any type of plant cell
What can stem cells produce in plants?
clones and make desired features such as disease resistant plants.
Positives of stem cells in plants?
save rare species, its cheap and quick to do.
