Stem cells Flashcards
What are stem cells?
Unspecialised cells that can turn into ANYTHING.
What are embryonic stem cells?
Unspecialised cells that are taken from embryos. They can turn into any type of cell and could be used to replace faulty cells in people. For example giving an insulin producing cell for people who suffer from diabetes. Then the embryos are destroyed.
Why is this an ethical issue?
Because some people think that this is playing god.
what are adult stem cells?
These are partly unspecialised stem cells which are found in adults. They can turn into MOST things but not everything. They can be extracted from bone marrow and could repair damaged tissues. For example the heart, liver etc…
