Genetic testing Flashcards
What is IVF?
When people with infertility problems can have a baby through fertilising outside the womb the implanted back into the mother. Also you can check what kind of genes or disorders the embryos have.
If an embryo has a genetic disorder then it is discarded and the healthy ones are implanted back into the mother. Obviously this is an ethical issue.
What is this process called?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
What is amniocentesis?
When scientists test the developing foetus for genetic disorders. They do this because the amniotic fluid contains the foetus’ genetic information hence why they do this.
Can children and adults have genetic testing? And if so why?
Yes. They test children and adults to see which alleles they’re carrying to see if they have a genetic disease. Couples may do this to find out if the child has a disease they will inherit for a disorder.
State the implications of genetic testing.
- It can be seen as playing god and nature.
- It could produce false positives and false negatives.
- Employers could discriminate.
- insurance companies can discriminate.
- A chance of miscarriage.
- You would have to plan ahead and make changes which can cost financially.
