Stem Cells Flashcards
2 types of stem cells.
One type is stem cells are unspecialised cells in animals that can divide or differentiate.
Stem cells can be embryonic or tissue stem cells
Therapeutic uses of stem cells
Repair of corneas. (Damaged by chemical attack).
Regeneration of damaged skin. (Producing a skin graft for burn victims)
Bone marrow transplant (treat patients with blood cancer).
Ethical issue of stem cells
Embryonic stem cells involve the destruction of an embryo.
Research uses of stem cells
•as model cells to study how diseases develop.
•for drug testing
Embryonic stem cells
Can differentiate into all the cell types that make up the organism and so are pluripotent.
All genes in embryonic stem cells can be switched on and so these cells can differentiate into any type of cell.
Tissue stem cells are involved in the
Growth, repair and renewal
Tissue stem cells are
Multi potent as they can differentiate into all the types of cell found within a particular tissue.
Blood stem cells
Blood stem cells located in bone marrow can give rise to all types of blood cell.
