DNA Replication Flashcards
DNA polymerase needs … to start replication
Primers
What does the primer allow
Allows DNA polymerase to add DNA nucleotides, using complementary base pairing.
What are the fragments of DNA joined together by
Ligase
What strand is replicated continuously
Leading strand
What strand is replicated in fragments
Lagging strand
What happens when DNA is unwound
DNA is unwound and hydrogen bonds between bases are broken to form two template strands.
What is a primer
A primer is a short strand of nucleotide which binds to the 3’ end of the template DNA strand.
Explain the role of DNA ligase in DNA replication
DNA ligase joins the fragments(lagging strand) together.
DNA polymerase…
Can only add nucleotides in one direction(3’ to 5’), resulting in the leading strand being replicated continuously and the lagging strand being replicated in fragments.
