Steel Pipe and Fittings Flashcards
What are the types of fittings?
Thread
Groove
Socket ( copper)
Welded ( socket or butt )
What is the most common fitting material and what is it prone too?
Cast, it’s prone to sand holes, distortion of the threads, poor internal seals
What fittings is typically not used in sprinklers and stretch’s?
Malleable fitting.
What type of fitting can not be re used ?
Malleable
What fittings are for high pressure installations?
Forged, generally schedule 80-160
What are the three kinds of 90’s?
Straight
Reducing
Street
What are the kinds of 45’s
Straight
Street
Different kinds of Tee’s
Straight tee (all same openings)
Reducing tee ( any open smaller )
Cross tee
Tees can be installed 2 ways, what are they
Bull headed
Tee on the run
What bushings are required on permanent installations
Face bushings
What bushings are made for temporary installations
Hex bushings
How many bushings are permitted on a cross tee
No more then 2
How many bushings are permitted on a straight Tee
1 bushing
Bushings should be avoided on which fittings
90’s
Extension fittings can only be used with what sprinkler heads
Sprinklers with a K factor of 8.0 or less
Extension fittings can only be used in which hazard settings
Light & ordinary hazard
How many extension fittings can be used and what’s the max length
Only 1 extension fitting can be used, no longer then 2 inches
What are unions used for
To join pipe from 2 different directions
What is the max size union
2 inches
What is a concentric reducer
Concentric reducer keeps the same centreline
What is an eccentric reducer
Eccentric reducer changes the centreline (flat bottom)
What are the 4 types of flange fittings
Tee
90
Reducer
Blank (Cap)
How do you calculate the the wrench size for a bolt
Multiply the bolt size by 1.5 OR with extra heavy bolts multiply 1.5 + 1/8
What are the different kinds of welded fittings
Pipe-o-let or thread-o-let
Weld-o-let
Groove-o-let
Only use approved fittings
What is a running thread
A thread past the length of the dye, loose non tapered thread used on pipe stands and water gong motors
What is a left handed thread and why is it used
It is opposite to a right handed thread, Used in place of a union
What flanges are used most often in fire protection
Split flange
Why is lubrication used with grooved couplings
To avoid pinching of rubbers
What type of groove is approved on light wall pipe
Rolled groove
What is the outside diameter, number of bolts, and bolt diameter for a 2” Flange
Outside diameter: 6”
Number of bolts: 4
Bolt diameter: 5/8”
What is the outside diameter, number of bolts, and bolt diameter for a 4” Flange
