STEAM ArcGIS Quiz Terms Flashcards
Base Map
Basic representation of a region of the earth as it would appear if viewed from above
Metadata
This term refers to data about data.
For GIS, the information typically includes such items as the data’s source, accuracy, data types, projection, date of origination, and other general descriptions.
Scale
Relationship between the dimensions of a feature on a map and the geographic features they represent on the earth
Layer
The visual representation of a geographic dataset in any digital map environment. Conceptually, a layer is a slice or stratum of the geographic reality in a particular area and is more or less equivalent to a legend item on a paper map.
On a road map, for example, roads, national parks, political boundaries, and rivers might be considered different layers.
Feature Class
A collection of geographic features with the same geometry type (such as point, line, or polygon). For example, highways, primary roads, and secondary roads can be grouped into a line feature class names “roads”.
Shapefile
A vector data storage format for storing the location, shape, and attributes of geographic features. A shapefile is stored in a set of related files and contains one feature class.
Point
A geometric element defined by a pair of x,y coordinates e.g. Lat,Lng
Polyline
A series of connected line segments
Polygon
On a map, a closed shapae defined by a connected sequencce of x, y coordinate pairs, where the first and last coordinate pair are the same and all other pairs are unique
Vector Model
A representation using points, lines, and polygons. Vector models are useful for storing data that has discrete boundaries, such as country borders, land parcels, and streets
Latitude
The distance of a place north or south of the earth’s equator
Longitude
The distance of a place east or west of the meridian at Greenwich, England.
Pins (symbols)
The markers placed on a map identifying a location
