Chemistry Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Indicator of chemical reaction
-Color change
-Formation of gas
-Formation of precipitate (solid)
-Energy transfer (endothermic/exothermic)
Synthesis
Reactants yield single product
A+B –> AB
Decomposition
Single reactant yields multiple products
AB–> A+B
Single Replacement
Lone element plus compound yields new lone element and compound. (If lone element is metal, it replaces the metal. If it is a nonmetal, it replaces the nonmetal)
A+BC–>B+AC
Double Replacement
A compound plus a compound yeilds a new compound plus a new compound
AB+CD–>AD+BC
Acid Base Neutralization
An acid plus a base yields water and a salt (reactants are always H__+___OH) (Works like single replacement)
Combustion
Some combination of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen result in the formation of CO2 and Water
(reactants are always CH+O or CHO+O)
Carbonate Decomposition
A metal carbonate compound yield metal oxide and carbonate
ACO3–>AO+CO2
Hydroxide Decomposition
A metal hydroxide compound yield metal oxide and water
AOH–>AO+H2O
Chlorate Decomposition
A metal chlorate compound yield a metal chlorine compound and O2
ACLO3–>ACl+O2
When do single replacements take place?
When the lone metal is higher than the metal it is replacing on the activity series, or the nonmetal is higher on the periodic table than the nonmetal it is replacing.
When do double replacements take place?
When at least one of the products is insoluble
