Q

What are Syphilis symptoms?

A

Syphilis causes problems in men and women beyond the reproductive system.
Stage 1: Primary syphilis, a sore or “chancre” appears on the genitalia. The chancre is an open lump or crater the size of a dime or smaller teeming with bacteria.
Stage 2: Secondary syphilis, a reddish-brown rash develops on the palms and soles of feet. The rash can go away on its own. At this point the symptoms are systemic because bacteria has been spread through the blood. Occurs 1 to 12 months after chance appears.

A

The most common STD in the U.S.
75 million Americans are currently infected with HPV
The virus works by infecting mucous membranes in the body (vagina, cervix, mouth), and it shows a special predilection for young girls.
Their young bodies have receptive vaginal mucus that easily holds the virus and their cervical cells are more receptive to viral infections allowing the virus to reproduce easily.

22
Q

Who is most likely to get HPV and how do they get it?

A

Teenagers are also more likely to develop precancerous growths as a result of HPV
These growths are more likely to develop into full-blown cancer.

Women:
1% develop genital warts

24
Q

What are Gardasil and Cervarix?

A

In 2006 the U.S. FDA approved the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer
Gardasil is highly effective in preventing infection with four types of HPV
Two types of HPV viruses cause about 70% of cervical cancers, and the other two cause about 90% of all genital warts
It does not prevent infections against all types of HPV
Recommended for females 9 to 26 years.

25
Q

27
Q

Herpes

A

This virus never disappears, it just goes underground hiding in certain nerve cells.
It lies dormant therefor months or even years until something - often stress - triggers an outbreak.
Even when genital herpes lies dormant you can still shed the virus, infecting sexual partners or babies.
85% of all people who test positive for herpes shed the virus despite having no clinical signs of infection.

28
Q

What is the primary outbreak for herpes?

A

The virus infects the skin cells in the immediate area of contact and spread to surrounding cells. THey are bumps that turn clear or yellowish and become filled with fluid.
Blister break open, oozing fluid containing viruses and then develop into painful sores.
A person sheds the virus when the virus is present in the skin cells, usually prior to the appearnace of sores and when they first appear.
Often a person sheeding virus is unaware of this danger, he or she may have no symptoms of disease at the time.
When the sore heals the virus is establishign itself in the nervous system for life.

29
Q
