Stave 5 Flashcards
‘For a man who had been out of practice for so many years, it was a splendid laugh, a most illustrious laugh.’
Repeated focus on the laugh shows the reader how long it had been since scrooge was jolly and further emphasises how he has changed.
‘As light as a feather’ ‘As merry as a schoolboy’
Similes shows how much Scrooge has changed. Juxtaposes the earlier simile of ‘solitary as an oyster’ and ‘sharp as flint’
‘Wonderful party, wonderful games, wonderful unanimity, wonderful happiness’
Repetition of ‘wonderful’ shows the huge contrast in character between Scrooge in Stave 1 and Scrooge in Stave 5.
‘Not a farthing less, a great many back payments are included in it.’
Huge contrast to Stave 1 when he replies ‘Are there no prisons?’ to the charity worker.
‘God bless us, everyone’
The fact that the novella ends with Tiny Tim shows how he is an integral part of presenting Dickens’ message to society through the novella.
