‘Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.’
Repeated simile emphasises that he’s dead so that the reader will be surprised when he returns as a ghost.
‘He was a tight-fisted at the grindstone’
Metaphor showing how awful he is. A ‘grindstone’ would have been used to grind corn into flour which would’ve been relevant to the audience at the time.
‘A frosty rime was on his head, and on his eyebrows, and his wiry chin.’
An extended metaphor is used comparing scrooge to cold weather, which emphasises his cold personality.
‘Kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time.’
The adjectives to describe Fred contrasts with Scrooge further shows how bad he is.
‘Foggier, yet and colder. Piercing, searching, biting, cold.’
Personification of the cold and the list of verbs show how the setting of cold weather reflects Scrooge’s personality
