Statistics M. 1 Flashcards
Statistics
the science of learning from data in the presence of variability
population
the total set of all “individuals” of interest
Sample
a subset of “individuals” selected from the population
parameter
numerical characteristic of a population, a fixed quantity
statistic
numerical characteristic of a sample, a variable quantity
A statistical question contains…
- a population
- variables to be measured
- variation in those variables
variable
any characteristic observed in a study (columns)
descriptive statistics
methods for organizing and summarizing information
-explore patterns
-used with sample data or with a population
inferential statistics
methods for drawing conclusions about a population
-use sample data to learn about populations
-only used with sample data
categorical variable
non-numerical variable with different categories
ex. types of pets owned by Stats 261 students
quantitative variable
numerical variable
ex. number of siblings
quantitative discrete variable
its possible yo form a set of separate numbers (count)
ex. shoe sizes, number of people
quantitative continuous variable
its possible values form a continuum of values over the real number line (measure)
ex. height, weight, time
