Statistical Testing Flashcards
what is statistical testing?
a way of determining whether a hypothesis should be accepted or rejected by telling us whether differents or relationships btween variables are statstically significant or have occurred by chance
proability definition
the likelihood that certain events will occur
significance level
level at which we can accept or reject H0
what does it mean if a result is significant at 0.05 level?
te relationship/difference being due to chance is alone is less than or equal to 5% so can accept H1 as pretty certain results are true, not due to chance
in what 3 situations might a 1% sig. level be used?
- drug trials
- where there’s no previous reserach
- one off studies
3 things to know for a sign test, to read the table and obtain a critical value
- significance level
- number of participants
- whether one or two-tailed H
3 criteria for a sign test
- must be looking for a diference not an association or relationship
- must have used a repeated measures design
- must have nominal data
4 steps of a sign test
- take B from A for ach P and determine sign
- count up +’s and -‘s, where number of least ocurring is the S value
- compare S value to critical value
- S must be less than or = to to be sig.
