Statistical Infrequency Flashcards
What is it based on?
Data
When does it occur?
When an individual has a less common characteristic
Irregularities in…
Data compared to others
Bell curve?
We expect most people to fall in the middle
The minority of people are on the extreme ends of the curve
AO3: IQ?
For people with a high IQ (over 130)- we don’t class that as a disadvantage, however using the bell curve, it means that people with a higher IQ are classed as being abnormal
How much of society are typically within the normal range?
68%
AO3: weakness- labelling?
Looks at extremes and may make people upset and cause emotional distress as they believe they are worth less than others
Cultures?
In different cultures, different ideas are important e.g. having a high IQ may not be very important in the UK, but in other countries, it may have a huge impact on life and welfare
AO3: Strength - clinical practise?
statistical infrequency is used in clinical practise as a formal diagnosis and a way to assess the severity of someone’s symptoms
AO3: strengths- being diagnosed?
Some people benefit from being abnormal- e.g. someone with a low IQ diagnosed with IDD can then access support services
AO3: Weakness- labelling?
Other people may not benefit from being labelled- there may be a social stigma around being labelled
