Failure To Function Adequately Flashcards
What is the behaviour like?
Different to everyone else - not in societal norms
Cannot cope with…
Everyday life
What does it cause?
Stress and inability to function properly I.e. affects relationships, disrupts work
Examples of failure to function adequately?
Unpredictability, personal distress, irrationality, unconventionality, maladaptive behaviour, observer discomfort, violation of moral standards
What is personal distress?
The extent to which a person feels upset about their own behaviour- may be lots of distress or not any at all
Irrationality?
No logic- makes decisions on a whim- may be an overreaction- out of character
What is unconventionality?
Not normal behaviour- not in line with society’s norms. Demonstrating unusual behaviours/ traits
Doing something out of the norm
Maladaptive behaviour?
Behaviour that doesn’t benefit you- it’s unhelpful
Observer discomfort?
Observing discomfort- looking at someone who is abnormal and feeling distress/uncomfortable
Violation of moral standards?
Acting in an immoral way e.g. alcoholics who are drink driving- against ethics
AO3: Strength- professional help
Represents a sensible threshold for when people need professional help.
Treatment and services can be targeted to those who need them most
AO3: Weaknesses- hard to say when someone is failing to function
It is easy to label non-standard lifestyle choices as abnormal e.g. it can be hard to say when someone is failing to function or when they have simply chosen to deviate from societal norms. Someone who favours high-risk activities may be classes as functioning to fail, when in reality they may be perfectly okay.
People who make unusual choices are at risk of being labelled as abnormal and the freedom of choice may be restrained
AO3: Weakness?
Failure to function may be normal- some circumstances may occur when we all fail to cope e.g. bereavement
It may be unfair to give someone a label that abuses them in the future just because they are reacting to difficult circumstances
