Stationary Waves Flashcards
1
Q
What are nodes?
A
> Points of zero disturbance / amplitude/ frequency
> Caused by waves destructively interfering (180ᵒ out of phase)
2
Q
What are anti-nodes?
A
> Points of maximum amplitude
> Caused by waves constructively interfering (in phase)
3
Q
How are stationary waves formed?
A
Formed by 2 waves which:
> Are of the same wavelength and frequency
> Are traveling in opposite directions to each other
4
Q
What constitutes half a wavelength?
A
The distance between 2 nodes

- —————–•—————–•
5
Q
How do you calculate an nth harmonic?
A
f = (1 / λ) * root (T/µ)
Where: f = Frequency [Hz} λ = Wavelength (different from actual length) [m] T = Tension [N] µ = Mass / length [Kgm⁻¹]
