Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum equal to?
Mathematically, what does it mean for Momentum to be conserved?
What are the units involved?
> p = mv
m₁v₁ = m₂v₂
Mass in kilograms (kg ) and velocity in metres per second (ms⁻¹)
What is impulse? What equation represents impulse?
> Impulse is the product of force and change in time
> [FΔt = Δmv] OR [FΔt = mv - mu]
What makes a force elastic? (conversely, what makes it inelastic?)
> A force is elastic if kinetic energy (Ek) and momentum (mv) are BOTH conserved
[Ek₁ = Ek₂] and [m₁v₁ = m₂v₂]
In an inelastic force, only momentum is conserved (kinetic energy is transferred)
If only mass and distance values are given, what equations might you have to consider?
> GPE = mgh
GPE = Ek
Ek = 1/2 (mv²)
