Station 2 Flashcards

1
Q

Palatoglossus

A
  1. Muscle of the soft palate and tongue
  2. Supplied by Vagus nerve
    • Lesion of this nerve deviates the uvula to the opposite side of lesion

Q

Submandibular salivary gland

A
  1. Has a superficial and deep part
  2. Its duct arises from the Wharton’s duct
  3. Opening of its duct is at the summit of the sublingual papilla located lateral to the frenulum of the tongue
  4. innervated by parasympathetic secretomotor fibers from facial nerve, which reach gland through the chorda tympani and synapse in the submandibular ganglion
  5. Close relation of Facial artery and vein to the submandibular gland, these may be injured during surgery of gland

Q

Hypoglossal nerve

A
  1. Supplies the intrinsic and all but one extrinsic muscles of the tongue [- palatoglossus]
  2. Lesion of the hypoglossal nerve deviated the tongue to the same side of the lesion when protruding the tongue
  3. Crosses the loop of lingual artery superficially
  4. Runs below the submandibular gland

9
Q

Lingual nerve

A
  1. Carries general sensation for anterior 2⁄3 of tongue and sensory innervation of submandibular gland
  2. The sublingual gland is supplied by postganglionic parasympathetic fibers from the submandibular ganglion through the lingual nerve
  3. Know the relation of the Submandibular duct to the lingual nerve
  4. Pierces the Submandibular gland

Q

Anterior 2⁄3 of the dorsum of the tongue

A
  1. General sensation: Lingual nerve
  2. Taste sensation: Chorda tympani
  3. Sulcus terminalis divides the tongue into the anterior 2⁄3 and posterior 1⁄3
  4. Lingual papillae
  5. Circumvallate papillae found in front of the sulcus terminalis

Q

Superior constrictor

A
  1. Circular muscle of the pharynx
  2. Auditory tube + Levator palati muscle arise between base of skull and superior constrictor
  3. Stylopharyngeus + glossopharyngeal nerve arise between superior and middle constrictors

Q

Inferior Constrictor

A
  1. Circular muscle of the pharynx
  2. Has two parts:
    1. Thyropharyngeus [innervated by pharyngeal plexus]
    2. Cricopharyngeus [innervated by recurrent laryngeal nerve]
    3. Clinical significance of Killian’s dehiscence between them [Anatomic weakness where Zenker’s diverticulum can form posteriorly, due to incoordination of muscles]
  3. Internal laryngeal nerve + Superior laryngeal vessels arise between middle and inferior constrictors
  4. Recurrent laryngeal nerve + Inferior laryngeal vessels arises from the inferior border of inferior constrictor

Q

Glossopharyngeal

A
  1. Posterior 1/3 of tongue and circumvallate papillae receive both general and taste innervation from glossopharyngeal nerve
  2. Arises from the gap between the superior and middle constrictors, alongside the Stylopharyngeus
