static electricity Flashcards
what is static electricity caused by? give and example
2 objects rubbing together. this causes electrons to move from one object to another
e.g. rod has more negative and cloth has more positive. rod gains electrons and is now a negative charge. colts has a positive charge
negative and negative =
positive and positive =
positive and negative =
repel
repel
attract
what charge does protons, neutrons electrons have?
protons - positive
neutrons - neutral
electrons (on outside) - negative
what happens on a van de graff?
- charge builds up on dome due to electrons being rubbed off by belt
- if big enough charge built the voltage becomes high enough to ionise air molecules
- the electrons jump down to earth ➡️ this is an electric current
what particles can leave an atom and when they do, what is the atoms charge?
electrons and it becomes positive
what is ‘static’ charge?
build up of charge and static is created when materials are rubbed together
what are materials like wool and balloons called?
insulators ➡️ not easy to allow electrons to flow through
