Q

what is static electricity caused by? give and example

A

2 objects rubbing together. this causes electrons to move from one object to another

e.g. rod has more negative and cloth has more positive. rod gains electrons and is now a negative charge. colts has a positive charge

Q

what happens on a van de graff?

A
  • charge builds up on dome due to electrons being rubbed off by belt
  • if big enough charge built the voltage becomes high enough to ionise air molecules
  • the electrons jump down to earth ➡️ this is an electric current
