radiation Flashcards
what are the charge of the parts of an electron?
- electrons ➡️ negative
- protons ➡️ positive
- neutrons ➡️ neutral
what is the top and bottom number of an atom?
top number
- mass no.
- no. protons and neutrons
bottom number
- atomic
- proton no. and same as electrons
where is the majority of the mass of the atom?
in the nucleus
what is most of the atom full of?
empty space
what is the relative mass of protons and neutrons?
1
what is the plum pudding model?
belief that an atom was completely positive in charge with electrons embedded in it
similarities and differences to plum pudding model and atom idea know
similarities
- both contain electrons and protons
- say its spherical
- both say protons are positive
differences
- no neutrons in p.p.m
- electrons in inside of p.p.m
- p.p.m was a solid mass, empty today
what happened in the Rutherford scattering experiment?
alpha fired through thin gold foil ➡️ alpha passed straight through ➡️ he found out that there was empty space ➡️ some particles bounced back because + and - repelled
why does most alpha particles pass straight through?
as atom is mainly empty space
why does some alpha deflect back?
because nucleus is + and + alpha particles repel
why does a very small amount of alpha deflect?
because its close to a small positive nucleus
