Q

explain how rubbing causes the ballon to become negatively charged

A

Rubbing a balloon with a woollen jumper transfers electrons from the wool to the balloon, causing the balloon to become negatively charged and the wool to become positively charged. This static charge can cause attraction or repulsion with other charged objects

Q

explain why the negatively charged balloon moved away from the ruler

A

negative electrons are transferred from woollen jumper to balloon and the balloon gets negatively charged, charges which are opposite repel.

Q

too mcuh static causes sparks

A

if the charges on a object become sufficiently large the electric field it produces will cause a spark, this will cause the object to lose its charge. easiest way to discharge object is to connect it to ground with metal wire.
