Static Electricity Flashcards
Electric charge
A property of matter that experiences a force when next to other charges or in a electrical field
Positive and positive repel
Negative and negative repel
But positive and negative attract
Coulomb: unit
Electrical fields of charges
Regions where charges experience a force
The closer together of the lines the stronger it is
Insulators
Insulators are objects that do not have free electrons therefore they cant carry charge
When u rub two insulators together Eg: a cloth and a glass rod, one of the objects will gain electrons (the glass rod) and one will lose electrons (the cloth) this is due to friction
So the glass rod is now negatively charged and the cloth is positively charged
Charging conductors by induction
When a positively charged rod is brought close to a metal sphere the negatively charged atoms come closer to the rod in the sphere and the positively charged atoms try to go further away from the rod
