Mass and weight and Density Flashcards
Weight and mass differences
Your mass is unchanged whether your on mars or earth whereas weight is a gravitational force on an object
Weight, the effect of gravitational field on a mass
Mass, how much matter is in an object
Weight equation
Mass x gravitational field strength
How to predict whether it will float in water
The density of water is 1g/cm^3
If the density is lower it will float, vice versa
Find the density of a liquid
Measure the mass of the measuring cylinder by putting in on a balance
Fill the liquid and measure new mass
New mass - old mass = mass of the liquid
The volume can be read on the cylinder
Find the volume of a solid
Measure the volume of the solid
If the solid is regular shape find the volume by using a ruler to measure the dimensions
If the solid is irregular then immerse it with water and measure the volume of the water when risen
New liquid volume - old liquid volume
Find the density using equation
Density formula and definition
Density = mass/volume
(Kg/m^3)
Density definition - mass per unit volume
Inertia
Resistance to change in motion
The larger the mass to harder to change its motion
