States & Separating Techniques Flashcards
What is filtration?
> separation of solids and liquids
residue is left on the paper (solid)
filtrate is left in the beaker (liquid)
What is distillation?
> separation of two or more liquids with different melting points
evaporate one liquid and condense it using a condensing column
What is chromatography?
> separation of inks
water carries inks up the chromatography paper
smaller and most soluble particle will go further up the paper
What is a solid?
> particles stay in a fixed shape/arrangement
strong forces of attraction
vibrate and use energy
What is a liquid?
> no fixed arrangement
particles have weaker forces of attraction
greater vibrations and more energy
take up the shape of the container
What is a gas?
> really weak or no forces of attraction
highest energy state and fast moving
take up shape of the container
