Crude Oil and Fuels - Hydrocarbons Flashcards

1
Q

How was crude oil formed?

A
  • Over millions of years ago it was formed from the tiny, ancient sea animals buried in the mud
  • Layer upon layer was laid down on top creating the conditions to make crude oil (high pressure and temperature, in the absence of oxygen)

Q

Describe distillation of crude oil

A
  • Crude oil contains many substances with different boiling points
  • At different temperatures the fractions turn into vapour at different times
  • The fractions are distilled and put into separate containers
