Crude Oil and Fuels - Hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
How was crude oil formed?
A
- Over millions of years ago it was formed from the tiny, ancient sea animals buried in the mud
- Layer upon layer was laid down on top creating the conditions to make crude oil (high pressure and temperature, in the absence of oxygen)
2
Q
What is crude oil?
A
- Finite source
- Dark, smelly liquid
- Mixture of different hydrocarbons
3
Q
What is a hydrocarbon?
A
-Compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon atoms
4
Q
Describe distillation of crude oil
A
- Crude oil contains many substances with different boiling points
- At different temperatures the fractions turn into vapour at different times
- The fractions are distilled and put into separate containers
5
Q
What is an alkane?
A
-Saturated hydrocarbon with the general formula CnH(2n+2)
6
Q
Examples of alkanes
A
- Methane
- Ethane
- Propane
- Butane
