States Of Matter Flashcards
What are the three main states of matter?
Solid
Liquid
Gas
Describe particles arrangement, movement and energy in:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) least energy, particles are vibrating but not moving, arranged regularly and packed very close together
b) more energy, particles are moving more and are colliding into one another, still touching but have an irregular arrangement
c) most energy, violently colliding with one another, irregular arrangement
Solid ➡️ liquid
Melting
Liquid ➡️ gas
Boiling
Gas➡️liquid
Condensing
When you go from a solid ➡️ liquid ➡️ gas the particles gain more….. therefore the particles collide … and are now …. apart
Kinetic energy
More
Futher
When you change from a gas➡️liquid➡️solid the particles …. kinetic energy, move ….. therefore making the particles …..
Loose
Less
Closer together
What is diffusion?
Movement of particles form a high concentration to an area of low concentration
In what states of matter can diffusion occur and why ?
Liquids and gases because particles are free to move whereas in solids they cannot move form place to place only vibrate
Define a solvent
A liquid which the solute (solid) dissolves in
Define a solute
A substance (usually a solid) that dissolves in a liquid to form a solution
Define a solution
A mixture formed when a solute has dissolved in a solvent
What is a saturated solution?
Solution in which no more solvent can be dissolved
What does a solubility curve look like? In:
- solids
- gases
- unsaturated solution
- supersaturated solution
- solubility of solid increases when temperature increases
- solubility of gases increases when pressure increases
- any mass below the line for a solute at a specific temperature shows the solution is unsaturated
- any mass above the line for a solute at a specific temperature shows the solution was supersaturated and unstable
