Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is the relative mass, relative charge and position of a proton
Relative mass = 1
Relative charge = +1
Position: in the nucleus
What is the relative mass, relative charge and position of a neutron?
Relative mass = 1
Relative charge = 0
Position = in the nucleus
What is the relative mass, relative charge and position of an electron?
Relative mass = negligible it’s so small!
Relative charge = -
Position = in the shells around the nucleus
What is the atomic number? And where is it found on the periodic table
The number of protons (and electrons) in the atom
Below the symbol for the element
What are the columns in the periodic table referred to as
Groups
What do elements in the same period have in common?
The number of shells
How many electrons are there in the first shell of an atom?
2
How many electrons can be in each shell?
Max 8
What is electronic configuration of calcium?
2.8.8.2
Look at it place in periodic table
In period four so will have 4 shells (numbers)
It’s in group 2 so will have 2 electrons in last outer shell
Do the maths and work upwards
Are non metals conductive (of electricity?
No
What kind of ions do metals form?
Positive ion
Why are the noble gases do not react?
They do not easily form molecules because they have a stable arrangement of electrons in their outershell (8)
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
- number if electrons in our shell is responsible for the different ways elements will react
- this means elements with the same number of electrons in the outershell will undergo similar chemical reactions
- therefore elements in the same group have similar chemical properties
What is the test for water
Add anhydrous copper sulfate and if the mixture turns blue, the water is present
