States of Matter Flashcards
4 states of matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas, & Plasma
What change of state occurs when a solid becomes a liquid?
Melting
What change of state occurs when liquid water becomes water vapor?
Evaporation
What is the name of the temperature at which freezing takes place?
Freezing/Melting Point
What are particles represented as in particle theory?
Small Solid Spheres
Which one of these is not a limitation of particle theory?
Particle theory can explain changes of state
Which state of matter has the most energy?
Gas
Characterisitcs of Solids
Particle arrangements are very close together
They have really low kinetic energy as they do not move a lot
Forces = The force is very strong because it is rigid.
They have very small spaces and are closely bound
Characterisitcs of Liquids
Particles = scattered around and bounce off of eachother
<ove around freely and bounce off each other so they have a high kinetic energy.
Force is weak as it does not stick together or anything
The spaces can be close and far depending on where they are
Characterisitcs of Gasses
Very far from each and are scattered around
Very high kinetic energy because they move freely and are very far away from each other.
The force is very weak as they are so far away and do not stick together
There are very big spaces between particles as there is a lot of space.
Water Freezing & Melting Point
0 & 100 Celsius
Define kinetic particle theory
All matter consists of particles in constant motion
the pressure and temperature of a gas in terms of the motion of its particles
If the volume of a container with a gas inside stays the same, the pressure of a gas increases as its temperature increases.
