States of Matter Flashcards
Define matter.
Matter is anything that can be weighed and takes up space.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas.
State three properties of a solid.
Has a fixed shape. Particles have strong bonds. Cannot be compressed.
State three properties of a liquid.
Takes the shape of the container. Particles have loose bonds. Can be slightly compressed.
State three properties of a gas.
Gas has no definite shape or volume. Particles have virtually no bonds. Can be compressed.
Are all substances made up of particles?
Yes
Does the kinetic energy of a particle increase with temperature?
Yes
What is the change of state from liquid to solid called?
Freezing
What is the change of state of liquid to gas called?
Boiling / evaporating
What is the change of state from solid to liquid called?
Melting
What is the change of state from gas to liquid called
Condensing
