Digestive System Flashcards
List the 9 organs involved in digestion.
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine. pancreas, liver, rectum and anus.
What is the function of the mouth?
Mechanical digestion - Teeth bite off and chew food into a soft pulp that is easy to swallow.
What is the function of the esophagus?
The esophagus is a muscular tube. It takes food from the throat, and pushes it down through the neck, and into the stomach.
What is the function of the stomach?

What is the function of the small intestine?
To absorb nutrients from food to be used by the body.
What is the function of the large intestine?
The purpose of the large intestine is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and transport it to the rectum
What is the function of the pancreas?
The pancreas make pancreatic jucies that help to digest protein, starch and fat.
What is the function of the liver?
The liver produces bile, which is stored in the gall bladder, to aid in the digestion of fats.
What is the function of the rectum?
Rectum’s job to receive feces from the colon, to let the person know that there is feces to be evacuated, and to hold the feces until evacuation happens.
What is the function of the anus?
It lets you know whether the contents are liquid, gas, or solid. The anus is surrounded by sphincter muscles that control of movement of feces.
What are enzymes?
