Stanley Flashcards
‘Roughly dressed in blue denim work clothes’
Stanley is first presented to be a manual worker (blue-collar) and also shows his wildness with the verb ‘roughly’
‘Strongly compactly built’
Stanley is the ‘alpha male’ - he is strong and dominating
‘I don’t like to be swindled’
As a man Stanley likes to be in charge - he does not wanted to be cheated out of anything especially money and also especially by a woman
‘Let’s cut the rebop’
Idiom - Stanley’s style of speech completely juxtaposes Blanche’s well thought out and elaborate sentences
‘Holding some packages…wears an undershirt and grease stained pants’
Stanley’s appearance is always rough but emphasises his role as the breadwinner and worker for the family - also demonstrates his masculinity
‘He advances a little…do you happen to know someone named Shaw’
Stanley is using proxemics by intimidating Blanche and moving closer to her - he is also using his knowledge to make her afraid of him and what he can find out
‘And serve ‘em to Her Majesty in the tub’
Epithet - jealousy of Blanche being served by Stella - he is losing her attention - childlike motive
‘What do you two think you are? A pair of queens?’
Rhetorical questions - he is challenging them like they have been doing to him only in a more violent manner
He gives a low whistle’
This suggests a sort of mating call - creates a sinister atmosphere
‘His mouth slowly curving into a grin’
Sinister - he is being deliberately cruel and creating tension as she knows she is helpless
