Mitch Flashcards
‘With awkward courtesy’
Mitch is depicted to be slightly more timid than Stanley - he appeals to Blanche because she then can manipulate him
‘Can I - uh - kiss you - good night’
Filler used to show Mitch’s hesitance and nervousness to take control
‘I am ashamed of the way I perspire’
Clumsy - they are making awkward small talk but Blanche constantly tries to flatter him
‘A man can punch me in the belly and it don’t hurt me’
This could show toxic masculinity - Mitch cares about looking strong to assert his dominance - possibly jealous of Stanley
‘He is unshaven’
Unpresentable - he doesn’t care anymore about pleasing Blanche, he is being troubled by what has happened
‘He stalks into the bedroom’
This behaviour mimics the way Stanlet behaves and will behave in scene 10
‘He says you been lapping it up all summer like a wild cat’
Simile - Blanche too is wild like Stanley - shows Mitch’s change of heart because he refused to tell Blanche that Stanley said about her before
‘I don’t think i ever seen you in the light’ /‘He tears the paper lantern’
This is symbolic because Mitch was the one who hung it up in the first place - signifying the end of the relationship
‘Fumbling to embrace her’
Mitch is trying to take control but he is too nervous - juxtaposes Stanley in the next scene
‘You’re not clean enough to bring in the house with my mother’
This is the most insulting thing Mitch has said so far considering Blanche is so obsessed with being clean and pure
‘At the sound of Blanche’s voice Mitch’s arm supporting his cards has sagged and his gaze dissolved into space’
Despite their fight in scene 9 it is clear that Mitch has some unresolved feeling for Blanche and perhaps feels guilty with the way he treated her (unlike Stanley)
