Standpoint Theory
traces how distinct social groups within a society shape members experiences, knowledge, and ways of interacting
Speech communication Theory
more specific analysis of how interaction with a particular social groups shapes styles of communication
-ex: men, women
organizational culture theory
the role of communication in creating and sustaining distinct cultures in organizational life
locations in cultural life
because society has hierarchy then different members of society experience and view things differently
standpoint
material, social, and symbolic conditions that shape a groups experiences
-to achieve stand point a person must become aware of and reflect on the conditions that define and shape a groups conditions
critical race theory
examines how laws and legal institutions have constructed race
-at one point blackness was defined as the “one drop rule”
situated knowledge
knowledge is situated in social circumstances
- knowledge is plural
- mothers have maternal instinct but maternal thinking can be learned by men
the outsider within
being able to see the world through the eyes of the group as well as from an outside perspective
-duality
critical assessment
- some standpoints must be better than others but it is unreasonable to call one superior to the other
- groups are not homogenous: men are not all the same and cannot have the same standpoint
