Aim
To investigate the psychological effects of being a prison guard or prisoner
Hypothesis
It is hypothesised that the prisoners will obtain psychological effects ts due to prison life, than when compared to the prison guards
Participants
Twenty four male Stanford uni students, 18 went into the experiment
How were the participants selected
Through a process of interviews, those that were deemed normal and healthy were chosen. Equal numbers of participants were randomly allocated to either of the two experimental conditions
What were the results
The guards showed a lot more aggression, insults and threats than the prisoners.
Prisoners had no commands over the guards but showed a lot more resistance and information.
Questions were almost the same.
The guards had more use of instrument however didn’t show any help.
What conclusions can be drawn
These results show that the behaviour of average, well educated men can be significantly affected when a role they are given involved power and status.
Limitations of experiment
There was no age or gender diversity
Ethical considerations
Wasn’t unethical at the time because it follows the guidelines however was deemed unethical afterwards because people suffered and others were allowed to inflict pain and humiliation on others
