Milgrams Experiment Flashcards
Aim
To investigate whether individuals will obey an authority figure who is instructing them to inflict pain on another participant
Hypothesis
It is hypothesised that the participants will obey the authority figure in objecting pain onto others, as opposed to not having an authority figure.
Participants
40 males aged between 20 years-50years
How were the participants selected?
It was advertised
Results
All participants shocked the learner through all shock levels. However less people agreed to shock the learner as they got physically closer to them and were less likely to obey when the authority figure was not present in the room.
Conclusions
Many people will perform acts they usually would not do just because an authority figure is telling them to.
Limitations
They were all male, there was no racial diversity
Ethical considerations
They make people believe they are inflicting pain on there which causes stress or inner conflict
