Standard Form Flashcards
How do you work out the standard form of a number?
Move the decimal until there is only one number infront of it
EXAMPLE:
7200000
7.2 x 10⁶
How do you multiply standard form?
- Multiply the numbers at the start
- Add the powers together
- Combine the terms
EXAMPLE:
(2 x 10⁻³) x ( 3 x 10⁷)
- 2 x 3 = 6
- 10⁻³ x 10⁷ =10⁻³⁺⁷ = 10⁴
- 6 x 10⁴
(2 x 10⁻³) x ( 3 x 10⁷) = 6 x 10⁴
How do you divide standard form?
- Divide the numbers at the start
- Subtract the powers
- Combine the terms
EXAMPLE:
(6 x 10⁸) / (2 x 10⁴)
- 6 / 2 =3
- 108 /104 = 108-4 = 104
- 3 x 104
(6 x 10⁸) / (2 x 10⁴) =
What is standard form?
A way to write big & small numbers
What do the indices tell you?
The number of places to move the decimal
EXAMPLE:
3.7 x 10³
10³ = Move 3 places to the right
3.7 —> 3700
How do you know whether to move the decimals to the right or the left?
If the indices are:
Positive + = move to the right
Negative - = Move to the left
How do you add or subtract standard form?
- write the numbers normally
- add or subtract
- change back to standard form
EXAMPLE:
5.3 x 10⁶) + (5.3 x 10⁶
- 5,300,000 + 5,300,00
- = 10,600,000
- 1.06 x 10⁷
