Audio, movies,, pictures, spreadsheets, word processed docs, and databases
What are the programs for word processing
Notepad .txt plain text with no formatting
Word pad .rtf formatted text which can be read by any word processor
Word 2013 .docx formatted text only readable by compatible software
What are the file formats for spreadsheets
XLS or XLSX - standard file format for MS excel, saves data, charts, formulas. XLSX form of XML format
XML - eXentisble Markup Language set of rules to make an open format that can be read by many programs and systems
CSV - Comma Separated Values stores tables of data in plain text
What does multimedia refer to
Text, audio, graphics, animation, video
What do high quality images, video and sound take up
A lot of space on a computer
What do multimedia files do
Compress files to reduce file size
What does compression do
It reduces file size but sometimes reduces quality
What are the file formats for audio files
WAV - uncompressed file format, good quality but large file size
MP3 - compressed file format that removes sound that the human ear cannot hear to reduce file size
How would you save a sound to a computer
You would have to change it to a digital signal

Compressed files without any loss of quality can be animated and can have transparent backgrounds but can only have 256 colours

Can have over 16 million colours but lose some quality when they are compressed to reduce their file size

Can have over 16 million colours have transparent backgrounds, compressed without losing any quality
How are animated GIFS made
Creating series of still images and playing them back as an animation
What does it mean when a picture has a high colour depth
Higher image quality but file size is large
