What is a network
Series of computers linked together so that they can send and receive data
What is a LAN
Local Access Network
Covers small area such as one room/building
Each computer on LAN is called a station
What are the advantages of a LAN
Can share data
Share expensive peripherals attached to network
Can log onto any computer with username and password within LAN
How can stations be connected
By wire or can be wireless
What are the two cables that a station can have
Coaxial cables
Twisted pair cabling
What is optical fibre
Uses light beams to transmit data at High speeds
Expensive but no interference
What is wireless
Infrared communication
Bluetooth

What is a WAN
Wide Area Network
Made up of computers that may be spread over country or all over the world ie the Internet
What is WWW
World Wide Web

What are hyperlinks
Used to navigate between webpages, documents and files
What is an Internal hyperlink (relative addressing)
Links between same website but to different parts
What is an external hyperlink (absolute addressing)
Link to a different website
What is a URL
Uniform Resource Locator
Unique address in order to locate file on WWW
What is a web browser
Program or app that allows you to view web pages
What is a search engine
Website that allows you to enter a search term and look for relevant websites

How a user finds their way around info on computer
What are the three types of navigation
Hierarchical
Linear
Web
What is hierarchical navigation
Most common and well understood starts with homepage and works it way down
What is web navigation
Allows multiple direct connections between webpages
What is linear navigation
Used for processes which follow an order
