Definition
Legal: disturbing someone’s peace knowing it is gonna cause effect
= repeated following and harrassing of a person that threatens his/her peace
–> repeated =/ now it can be used even if it was one time (ex. calling 50x times in one day)
Numbers
Can escalate to violence and murder but murder only 2 % –> 90% of women who were murdered were followed by their ex prior to the murder
Can last 2 - 4 weeks and then stop (depending on reaction)
–> else it will mostly continue 6 - 12 months
Mostly it are people we know
Consequences
For victim: paranoia, isolation, aviodance, moving, …
Common reactions from victims
Moving with: asking to stop –> interacting mostly makes it worse
Moving against: being very agressive, threatening
Moving away: ignoring, not communicating –> best response
Moving inward: minimizing the negative consequences
Moving outward: asking for help
Types of stalkers (Mullen)
1: Rejected stalker: after a break up stalks ex for revenge, substitute for relationship
2: Incompetent stalker: has lack of seeing disinterest and tries to create affection
3: Intimacy seeking stalker: has delusional love and hopes love will emerge
4: Predatory stalker: stalks for sadistic sexual fantasy and motives
5: Resentful stalker: stalks to seek revenge –> feels there has been injustice towards him
