Stains Flashcards
Extrinsic Stain
Stains on external surface of tooth.
Can be removed by brushing, scaling, polishing
Intrinsic Stain
Occurs within tooth surface.
Cannot be removed by scaling or polishing.
Exogenous
Stain developed from sources outside the tooth
Can be extrinsic or intrinsic.
Endogenous
Stains developing from within the tooth.
Always intrinsic. Associated w dentin thru enamel
Green Stain
*enamel under this stain may be demineralized -> fluoride treatments!
Chromogenic bacteria, primarily in children
Black Line Stain
Calculus-like.
Found in clean mouths.
Tobacco Stain
Can become exogenous, intrinsic
Orange + Red Stain
Chromogenic bacteria, rare
Amelogenesis Imperfecta
Enamel partially or completely missing bc of a disturbance of ameloblasts - hereditary, yellow/brown
*Endogenous intrinsic
Imperfect tooth development
Dentinogenesis Imperfecta
Abnormal dentin due to disturbance of odontoblasts.
Translucent/blue/gray
Genetic Imperfect tooth development
Enamel hypoplasia : Local
Affects a single tooth due to trauma
Fluorosis
Damage ranges:
White spots to brown stain to enamel pitting
