Stains Flashcards
What is the purpose of stains?
T o increase the contrast between different structures
What is a differential stain?
Sections can be stained with multiple dyes to show up different tissues
What is viable
A living specimen
What is non-viable
Dead specimen
What is crystal violet stain used for
To stain cells purple and are used gram staining
What is gram staining
Bacteria staining
What is methylene blue used for
Stains nuclei in animal cells to provide contrast
Congo red stain used for
Negative stain that provides contrast from the cell and the background
Eosin
Stains cytoplasm pink
Hematoxylin + eosin
Stains nuclei dark blue/purple
Protein, extracellular and red blood cells pink/red
Iodine
Stains starch blue-black and used in animal tissues to help show nuclei and cell membrane
Aniline sulphate
Stains lignin yellow
Trypan blue
Stains dead cells blue, also used to study hypae
