Polysaccharides Flashcards
What us glucose stored as in a plant
Starch
What is glucose stored in animals as
Glycogen
What is amylose
A polymer of glucose joined by a 1-4 glycosidic bond
What is amylopectin
A polymer of glucose joined by a 1-4 glycosidic bond with branches of a 1-6 glycosidic bond
How does amyloses and amylopectins helix help function
It’s compact, so more energy can be stored in a small place
How do the branches help function
The enzyme amylase can act upon it and release energy slowly, so is good for long-term storage
The compound can be hydrolysed to release the glucose monomers when needed
How does starch being insoluble help function
Good for storage
What is glycogen
The main storage in animals and fungi with more branches but shorter
Name 3 polysaccharides
Starch
Glycogen
Cellulose
