Stainless Steel Crown Flashcards
What are the major advantages of stainless steel crowns?
- Longevity
- Reliability
- Total seal
What are the indications for use of stainless steel crowns?
-Dental age, long time to exfoliation
-Caries lesion of any size if Caries risk
high
-Extent of caries both within the tooth or individual
(significant extent)
Pulp treatment
Developmental defects (e.g. enamel hypoplasia
-Behaviour
+ Motivation of parent or child (can they come in often, ohi, diet)
What is usually used to cement crowns?
-GIC
What are the burs and dimensions used for a stainless steel crown prep?
-Occlusal: 1-1.5mm (HS diamond football/large round/ wheel bur)
(Round angle between occlusal and buccal/lingual surfaces)
(Remove any remaining caries with slow speed 4 or 6)
-Proximal: 1mm (L10)–> should be flush surface rather than having a typical shoulder/chamfer; basically a feather edge
(Round junction between interproximal and lingual/buccal)
- Lingual + buccal surface: 0mm (do NOT reduce)
- Check crown fit, adjust with crimper or crown former pliers
What instrument can be used to determine if interproximal reduction is sufficient?
-A probe should be able to be passed through CT
Where should crown margin be located?
1mm subgingivally
What can be used to alter crown shape?
- Crimper: gingival area
- Squeezing: mesio-distal reduction in diameter
- Crown scissors or slow speed green stone
What should you check for before starting crown preps?
-Occlusal height of marginal ridges: crown should imitate this
