Stages of Sleep Flashcards
NREM 1
The stage between wakefulness and sleep. Muscles are still quite active and eyes may open and close from time to time.
NREM 2
First unequivocal stage of sleep. Muscles become less active and conscious brain activity ceases.
NREM 3
Deep delta wave sleep. The sleeper is less responsive to the outside world. Dreaming is more common in this stage of sleep.
REM
Occurs in cycles of 90-120 minutes throughout the night. Rapid eye motion, Breathing is more rapid, and heart rate increases closer to waking.
Sleep spindles
during stage 2 sleep. Sleep spindles are generated in the reticular nucleus of the thalamus. the brain is inhibiting processing.
K complex
Brief electrical activity in the brain seen in stage 2 sleep. aid in memory consolidation.
