Substance use disorder
Self harming disorder through substance abuse.
Psychoactive drugs
Chemicals that change our perceptions and moods.
Tolerance
With the continued use of dugs & alcohol the user’s brain chemistry changes and adapts to the substance.
Addiction
When the person craves the substance despite its adverse effects.
Withdrawal
abruptly stopping the use of a substance that one is addicted to can cause unbearable symptoms of withdrawal.
Depressants
Drugs such as alcohol, tranquilizers, and opiates that calm neural activity and calm body functions.
Alcohol use disorder
Prolonged and excessive drinking classifies alcohol use disorder.
Barbituates
Depress Central nervous system activity. barbiturate high gives them feelings of relaxed contentment and euphoria.
Opiates
Depress neural functioning. Opiates include heroin. breathing slows, and lethargy sets in.
Stimulants
Excites neural activity and speeds up body functions. rate and breathing rate increase.
Amphetamines
A stimulant. Amphetamines include adderall and cocaine. amphetamine causes emotional and cognitive effects such as euphoria, change in desire for sex, increased wakefulness, and improved cognitive control. It induces physical effects such as decreased reaction time, fatigue resistance, and increased muscle strength.
Cocaine
Is snorted, injected or smoked. It enters the bloodstream quickly and provides a rush that depletes the brain’s supply of dopamine.
Methamphetamines
Triggers the release of dopamine and the effects last up to 8 hours, providing 8 hours of energy and euphoria.
Ecstasy
A stimulant and mild hallucinogen. Ecstasy triggers the release of dopamine but primarily it releases stored serotonin and blocks its reuptake, prolonging its feel good effects.
Hallucinogens
Distort perceptions and evoke sensory images in the absence of sensory stimulus
Near death experience
An altered state of consciousness reported by 10 to 15 percent of patients revived from cardiac arrest.
LSD
This may include altered awareness of the surroundings, perceptions, and feelings as well as sensations and images that seem real though they are not. It is used mainly as a recreational drug and for spiritual reasons.
Marijuana
A mild hallucinogen amplifies sounds sights and colours. Marijuana relaxes and disinhibits providing relaxation and euphoria but also inhibiting motor skills.
